Australian Dual Nationals 🇦🇺🏳️

Ive heard Popa's view on the Segecic story, yes it does come out as trying to defend themselves which you can understand and point the blame on the player here however when Popa says im coming from a different generation and expect mostly gen z players to understand he's point of view? Not sure I agree with this sentiment.

Let's hope the lessons are learned from this so we dont experience this again, my fear is we going to again but I hope im wrong.

If this is a time the FA need a TD/DOF etc then its now so the next young talent doesn't slip over the cracks.
This... Popa is totally is totally out of touch with managing gen z.

I dont want to sound rude but even with the likes of Irvine who is technically limited and a player in Harry Souttar who hasn't played much football in 2 years I don't think squad can go far, maybe a round of 16 match at best but that's it from what I can see.
With this squad with those two back I would say a best third and a RD 32 is the ceiling. With the right squad and the right tactics top the group and take advantage of the easiest quadrant to get to QF.

Points to note -
Turkey (likely our first opponent) are noted for their slow tournament starts.

USA is the lowest ELO ranked team. They win friendlies but are brittle in competition these days. We dominated them until we tired when they had 5 days to acclimatise at altitude and we flew in on the day. this was a deliberate tactic by Popovic to test the squad.

Paraguay are stingy and will frustrate the US.

The MLS GK, Defenders and Mids are all poor - a product of the DP entertainment of the MLS and the lack of interest in the rest of the MLS squad. i.e. O'Neill, Rowles, Degenek and even a young Herrington look like standouts in the MLS

They have no real 9 that doesn't rely on service - there main #9 is more in the mould of Jamie Mac. Give him the ball he might score - but he won't get the ball. Their defence are slow to turn a speedy roaming attack like we can be and like Turkey will offer will burn and frustrate the US. Richards in particular loves to latch onto one threat 3 speedy roaming forwards and he will be fouling and shirt pulling and unlike friendlies he will get carded.

Paraguay are suspect against tall players in set pieces.

Crowds won't be an advantage for the US. Each of their opponents will bring 5000+ passionate fans, Active us support will be a tenth of that. corporate tickets and high prices will turn off a lot of real fans and event goers will be the norm.

I can understand playing for another nation’s youth national team if it’s more practical to do so (as with Ale Circati and Cristian Volpato playing for Italy’s youth teams since they played for Italian clubs) but when it comes to senior football I think it should be the country you were born, raised and developed in. If the Socceroos were crap then good players not playing would make us even worse. You can’t improve a team without good players.

If you can’t make the national team of that country then you can switch to still play internationals. Take the Dutch for example. Dutch players who are good enough will play for the Netherlands but if they’re not then it’s great that they’re gonna go and improve the quality of teams like Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Indonesia and Suriname (all former Dutch colonies; I’m pretty sure Curaçao’s whole team is Dutch and most of Indonesia’s starting 11 is Dutch, plus Suriname is converting a lot of Dutch players for their World Cup playoff).
I think it is up to the player.

Good new yes, disagree with the rest. If he was available for this squad I wouldve called him up and started him (depending how he trained/integrated). He's a fantastic player, and we lack midfield ball winners with very good distribution skills.
We do in this squad - but australia doesn't.

Good point about those three.
Interesting quote from Didulica in the Guardian article about Segacic.

I think it is a pretty common occurrence where second and third gen migrants don't feel and are often told you aren't Aussie, then at the same time when they return 'home' they are told and don't feel like they are from there either.

When I was chatting to one of my football mates, who is third gen Italian, he just can't believe these guys. To the point where he actually gets upset haha. I suspect they may end up regretting the decision later in life. Triantis maybe less so as he will probably have an international career, but Segacic and Volpato if they don't make it internationally will probably wonder what the point was.
It's interesting the migrant experience. There are many stories of young people who reject their parents' culture because they feel Aussie and want to be accepted as Aussie, and many the opposite, like Didiluca above. To throw in my own personal experience, born in Birmingham (less than a mile from Villa Park!) to Scottish parents. Largely due to being mocked as a Pommie at school, I supported England passionately at a time when they lost everything (except the WC in 1966). Wasn't until my late 20s that I felt totally Aussie, though still fond of ENG and SCO. I have a lot of experience going to Socceroos friendlies against teams like Turkey where there was more support in the stands for the visitors from their migrant communities here. I remember being at a WCQ at the Sydney Football Stadium v Israel in 1989. Half the stadium were waving Israeli flags. I don't like it but I understand it.

Israeli flags against us? Our Israeli community isn’t huge. They certainly exist but they aren’t comparable to the other communities we’re talking about here.

You are behind the times Popovic. It makes me so angry how out of touch he is and what it will cost us.

I'm a young person and I completely disagree. I think the fact that he wasn't willing to fight for his spot is a character flaw on his part.
