Australian Dual Nationals 🇦🇺🏳️

I think the FA and our coaches have to come down a lot harder on players given these Bennie revelations. All this time he's been growing and playing for our U20 only to have Scotland as a very strong alternative in his mind.

They can keep it a secret but can you imagine the U20 WC atmosphere 'yeah it's good here with Australia but I wouldn't mind getting into the Scotland squad under a year from now.'

Replace that with any other two nations and you can see how awkward it is.

Albania are chasing kutleshi and mehmeti too incidentally
This is akin to the UK citizenship changes. No country has had as much historical reach than Britain in that there are that many people in other countries with British heritage that would be legal citizens but have never needed or wanted to bother confirming it.

Australia has a very small diaspora. A country like Albania is proportionally massive. Morocco have built academies but it'd be lying to say that's why they're good. It's all off the back of European development.

Australia can ill afford to become a developer of top players for other countries.

I hope that someone in the media push the federation and Popovic on this. Football360 has been good but lets see if they have the minerals to address a topic that may be uncomfortable for the federation and national team coach. The Stan interview with Popovic was good but how soft was it for Popovic. A bunch of mates chatting and zero hard questions.

As I posted a few pages back I think the rogue set wherever they were from during Ange's tenure aren't around anymore. Remember the back 3 grilling and argument press conference?

Isn't the theory it was from Fox Sports as they felt they owned the game back then and Slater also had his pieces.

Popovic will say the player was in camp and they had contact and the the player decided to go elsewhere with zero reflection on his part.

The world game also had enough gravitas that they could do tough interviews

these days it is difficult because you lose access

I'm hoping if I'm sufficiently nice I can get away with tough questions haha

You mean tough media types won't be invited to press events anymore?

If the press essentially harass the manager like they do in England then I get it but here we have strong cases to get clarity.

This is why I dislike the channel 10 coverage as it's too insular and rosy. Everyone had a good game.

rosy for the players is probably fine

you want them to feel the nation is behind them (and just quietly select someone else if they dont make the cut rather than bagging them)

the coach and governance need to be subjected to tough questions in order to be at the top of their game

The Croatian Football Federation (HNS) has announced Segecic's allegiance switch.

He will be joining the Croatian Under 21s squad for the Euro Qualifiers.

You are again conveniently stripping away all the context and choosing to ignore the root cause of WHY they turned their back on playing for the Socceroos after originally making the decision that THEY DID WANT TO PLAY FOR THE SOCCEROOS.

You and I are never going to agree on this mate. That much we can agree on! 🙂
I'm not ignoring anything, I just have a different opinion to you. To me the signing of the paperwork asking for a switch is the decision. What they did beforehand showed they thought about playing for Australia, but decided against. I don't accept the "they were proud Aussies until Popovic pushed them away" because when you think about it , it really sounds like rubbish. At best they were undecided and took an opportunity, until they made a final decision.

Thats the current first team. That's whats ahead of him at the moment.

Like I said he had more of a chance playing for socceroos but he is a good option to have.

Thats the 21s squad. He'll be in the stand up, call up list where Noa Skoko is. That's my guess.
Daniel Garb saying there's been no falling out with Popovic to then sever ties to be on an U21 standby is just odd. Clearly it's about the long term and putting the Australia topic to rest.

I suggest you look back at the U20 Asian Cup 3 years ago. Segecic and Triantis were very content back then.

With their status growing many got in their ears and their young impressionable minds have been changed. I understand the strong cultural influence they have and they see comfort in that.

Both were called up only for Popovic to okay his stupid mind games of benching them. Balard was another prominent player kept out concerningly long and was overlooked for a window.

Although I don't like Popovic, we need to consider the timeline. Poppa was appointed on September 24 with the Socceroos looking at not qualifying. There were two FIFA windows left for 2024, October & November and five in 2025. The Socceroos qualified for the world cup in the June window, leaving September, October & November windows. I don't think that Segecic should have been capped prior to qualification, neither his form nor the other potential players warranted his selection (nor for that matter Milanovic). The left the September, October & November windows. The question then becomes what is the purpose for these windows leading to the WC? There was flak given when Patrick Beach was selected because the team is supposed to be gelling.
Also, Ange did invite young players to Socceroos training so that they could get a feel for what is required of them to be considered for the game time.

and they are now happy to represent Croatia and Greece respectively. That was their decision. Accept it as such.
These cases need to avoided in future. We can't invest in their development only for them to choose someone else when they're start seeing the benefits. No country wants that.

It's bad management by the FA and Popovic and these fake media days to get a statement from the player didn't make anything official.

If we'd played Triantis how would he have reacted then? He wouldn't be able to change to Greece. I think these are rash decisions aiming to get back at Popovic.

Arnold has some doing here too. Segecic and Triantis are special dual national cases. It was obvious in March 2023 that these two had immense potential.

I know we had so many mature regulars but they should've been expedited for the Bangladesh game in November 2023. Duke, Borrello and Maclaren scored 6 of the 7 goals. That's not long term thinking. It's Bangladesh at home for god's sake.

What happened under Popovic was woeful favouritism and baffling unwarranted selections.

-Starting Brattan Japan away.
-Playing Teague more than Triantis. Teague did well but why didn't we cap Triantis in the China window?
- The coddling of Okon.
- Ignoring Balard then being shown up by him, Toure and Irankunda against NZ.
- Matthews did well but throwing him in Bahrain away was a risk.
- Bringing in an ineffective Caceres out of the blue.
- Giving Hrustic too many lifelines.
-Beach deserved a go, Al Hassan and D'Agostino in recent windows just shouldn't be happening.
- Ignoring Robertson and Toure risking a switch.

He got he introduction of Velupillay right. The persistence with Boyle and Borrello hasn't worked. I can't remember, did he overlook Irankunda and it got some headlines going?

The youngest I can remember with Ange was McGree in 2017 for the UAE home game. Ange selected players he believed in at the time but got a lot of new blood in after the 2014 world cup.
