A thread for general discussion in the leadup to and during the 2026 Women's Asian Cup, including any discussion on the Matildas squad selection and who should be picked for the final squad. This will be the main thread for general discussion of the Women's Asian Cup in addition to Tillies squad selection talk so please use this thread to avoid cluttering other threads, including a match discussion thread which will be created closer to the tournament rolling around.

Tameka Yallop has been ruled out of the entirety of the Women's Asian Cup after sustaining a significant hamstring injury in Brisbane Roar's 3-1 A-League Women win over Adelaide United. She'll undergo surgery early next week, with a return to play timeframe set for ALW finals, which would be between late March and mid-April.
An unfortunate injury and wishing her a quick recovery. I think this is a big loss for the Roar (who just lost 3–0 away to the Jets) but not so much for the Matildas as I don't think she makes the squad anymore, especially with our depth in midfield that includes younger talents.

Grace Kuilamu has now been ruled out of the entirety of the Women's Asian Cup after sustaining an ACL injury in Brisbane Roar's 3-2 A-League Women round 10 loss away to Central Coast Mariners. She'll undergo surgery in the coming weeks, with her rehabilitation program commencing immediately upon the conclusion of the procedure.

At what point do the Tillies fully embrace the Carpenter winger experiment? I've been calling for it for about 2.5 years and it obviously works
I mean we could do it but I think we're pretty sorted on the wing unless Caitlin Foord or Hayley Raso gets injured.

If we had Ellie Carpenter on the wing then I guess we would have Charli Grant and Courtney Nevin as our full backs?

I doubt we'll see Ellie Carpenter play on the wing for the foreseeable future especially given that her primary position is right back, but if Montemurro were to be radical in terms of experimenting with positions then I think Jessika Nash could play as a fullback along with Nevin, with Charli Grant playing at centre back with Catley.

What about Clare Hunt?

Of course Clare Hunt can still play as a centre back, and will more than likely start, but we have plenty of depth and versatility amongst the playing list which means that certain players can play in multiple positions also.
Yeah we actually have quite a lot of depth in defence. And our depth isn't shit either, they're at top clubs. This alone disproves the idea that we've stopped making quality players and other countries will easily overtake us and leave us struggling.

American singer Audrey Nuna, the voice of Mira from Huntrix in the movie K-Pop Demon Hunters, will headline the opening ceremony ahead of the Matildas vs Philippines group stage match in Perth.

Personally not a fan of the movie at all but given that both KPDH and the Tillies are popular among kids it's a great marketing move for sure. Not sure why they didn't pick the South Korea game though.

Sharn Freier has now been ruled out of the entirety of the Women's Asian Cup after sustaining an ACL injury in Brisbane Roar's 2-2 A-League Women matchday 15 draw at home with Central Coast Mariners. She'll undergo surgery in the coming weeks, with a rehabilitation program commencing immediately upon completion of the procedure.

Football360 had a story about the possibility that Iran and South Korea might dip out.Iran because of the domestic situation with the crackdown on dissent and judicial killings, etc.S Korea because of the women's team have a risible amount of money spent on them by their association and they are using the threat of not coming as leverage against the football authorities.

Iran should be sanctioned by FIFA after all that's happened. But here we have Gianni Infantino wanting to unban Russia and giving the World Cup to Saudi Arabia. Nothing's changed with FIFA.

I don't think anything will change with FIFA unfortunately as the Middle Eastern nations continue to have more power and influence over the round ball game, and even with calls for Iran to be sanctioned it's doubtful that anything will actually eventuate.
