Summer of Cricket thread

He is one youngster to which I was referring. Is only 18 and already playing Seconds. Gives us some idea of the quality of an emerging Tassie batsman. There is certain to be others and I will endeavor to locate them. Dwyer needs to be on this seasons rookie contract list.
Our Crick Tas member who was familiar with all the grade scene, has sadly passed on, Baggers. You probably met him.

Met the ACT/ Tas Match Manager and a North Hobart club stalwart, who knew a lot, but we don’t see them in Cricket Tas Members much.

Hobart is the second driest capital in Aus
Now that I was not aware of. I say hats off to Tassie for innovation and vision all the same, not only for what will be the best undercover sports stadium in the country, but for building the nations very first legal casino. Any other firsts I dont know about Jon.

You disagree DC?

I did allude to this in an earlier post over why CA has dropped a stand alone Tassie from the underage nationals. Small pop equates to a small talent pool.

Actually 2026 pop is closer to 600,000 and estimated to grow by another 100,000 by 2030.

Any idea how many players are currently registered with the TCA or junior cricket organisations?
Can you answer this for me Jon.

Disappointing in my search for young batsmen under 25 Jon. Seems those all ready mentioned, plus Tom Dwyer, Blake Garrett, Luca Di Venuto, William Barwick are the only top prospects. And early days for them as all only 18/19. Will keep digging.
O'Connor has great stats.

Nathan Ellis's hamstring injury and a pivotal mid season loss have left the Hurricanes to ponder what might have been after the Sixers dashed their dream of back to back BBL titles. A huge blow losing debatedly the best deathie in world T20 Int for such a vital game. I'd like Owen to drop down to finisher and David to open, moving forward.

I'll be watching this giant left arm swing mans progress. Looked short of a gallop in that Seconds match.

Sorry mate must have copied another stat. O'Connors are not quite as good as that but still not too shabby.

W: 20
@16.4
Best: 3/22
Runs: 289
@28
Best: 89

Nevertheless he is a clever bowler with a mix of swing and seam up and even both in the same over. That is keeping the batman guessing and building pressure. And we know he can bat. This kid could be anything in the next few yrs as he appears to be learning his dual crafts at a brisk pace.

I follow Tassie and WA mostly for personal reasons even tho I am a born and bred native of the 'harbor city'. But do keep an eye on emerging talents from my state as I get a buzz from taking the cricket journey with them.

Pretty good couple weeks for Will Taylor who only just finished his HSC, made NSW 19s and to top off that has now taken a 1st Grade club hat trick in amongst career best figures of 6/26 - a maiden 1st Grade 5 wicket haul. It should be said this is a monumental performance from the just turned 18 year old, stepping up for the Saints bowling outfit in the absence of Francis and O’Riordan.

Will missed the current U19 WC thru injury, hope not back stress. Have not seen him bowl yet but understand he is a specialist seamer with a good wrist action to be able to stand up the seam at will. Well a hat trick in your first PC Firsts match attests to that.
p.s. One of our best ever seamers Josh Hazlewood also played for the St George club before hitting the big time.

kind of amazing how good his technique was, was there a technically better player in my time?

Then again he averaged low 40s showing technique isn't everything

great to watch though

I feel that often when looking back on ones career it may be that great 'technique' may have constrained the natural movements that lay underneath.

When Bradman first made the NSW team he tried the same technique taught to batters such as the Waughs and he decided it wasn't for him and he would stick to his own method...the rest is history.

99.94

Mental stamina also plays a major part in the makeup of a Test cricketer, any elite sportsman in fact. Junior was also not called Afghanistan - the forgotten war (Waugh), for nothing as he had to basicly forge his own career behind his more successful brother. Steve had masses of mental stamina and resilience, no better shown than his gutsy double hundred in Windies in '95. Do you guys see Mark doing similar against the hosts power house pace attack of Ambrose, Walsh and Bishop. I dont.

Steve was underrated as a leader.

Like AB, he made runs when the team needed them.

Just like Lillie, Warne and Cummins took wickets when the team needed them.

In many sports I take notice of the players who play well under pressue when their team is losing, or when momentum is slipping away.

The other key players are the ones who always put in 100% for the whole game

This champion quality isn't common, becuase remaining cool and focused under pressure isn't common.

If a guy doesn't have the talent to be a champion, putting in a shift is the next best option.

So do I. The best of the best in this modern era was Steven Smith from 2014-18 as he almost single handedly won us match after match against all odds. The year after his suspension he consolidated his legendary status in the 2019 Ashes with former players calling his performance the best ever by a SINGLE PLAYER in Ashes history. And that includes The Don.
I'll raise you 45 yesterday and today here in the City of Churches.
🫨 We have topped 42 twice this summer. Is 45 an Adelaide record.

You are becoming an expert on Tas cricket, Richie!

I ask people I think are in the know for info, but end up quoting your info!
